Corrosion Resistance: Steel Buildings vs. the Elements
How Steel Buildings Fight Off Rust and Corrosion
If you’re planning a construction project, one of the main factors will be durability and how the structure will stand up to the harsh elements. Strong rains and high humidity bring excess moisture, which can often lead to rust and corrosion. How well do steel buildings resist corrosion?
- Galvanized steel provides a layer of protection.
Most construction projects use galvanized steel, which is coated with a layer of zinc to provide extra protection. This layer is a shield that prevents moisture from contacting the steel.
- Draining design is critical.
Because corrosion occurs when water or moisture comes in contact with steel, having an effective roof and drainage design is important. Roofs should have specific slopes to ensure proper runoff. In addition, the gutters, downspouts, grading, and other drainage mechanisms should redirect water away from the structure.
- Factory-applied finishes serve as a barrier.
Stainless steel building components are often treated with a special coating or a high-performance paint system such as Kynar 500® or Siliconized Polyester. This applies a barrier between the steel itself and the elements. Not only does it prevent corrosion, but it also resists fading and UV damage.
- Special treatments for different environments.
In addition to the high-performance paint or layers of zinc, there are other environment-specific treatments that can be applied to steel. For example, in high-humidity areas, additional primers can be applied. And in high-salinity areas (such as coastal regions), upgrade materials such as Galvalume® can be used.
- Only minimal maintenance is required.
Unlike wooden construction materials, steel building components won’t rot or warp. With minimal maintenance, including maintaining protective layers, steel buildings can resist corrosion for years or even decades.
Pro tip: Inquire about corrosion protection and warranties
For your next steel building project, consult with your builder about the humidity or salinity in the project site environment. Ask about special coatings, protective barriers, and even corrosion warranties.
Weathering the storm: Steel buildings are built to last
Steel buildings are an excellent choice due to their longevity, low maintenance requirements, and durability against harsh weather elements. Metal buildings are a sustainable and economic option when you’re looking to build a structure in a climate with lots of moisture or high humidity due to their ability to resist corrosion.
